Susan G. Komen for the Cure began in 1982 as a promise between Nancy G. Brinker and her sister Susan G. Komen who died of breast cancer at the age of 36. By the end of 2008, Komen for the Cure will have invested nearly $1 billion in breast cancer research and community outreach programs, becoming one of the world’s largest sources for funds in the fight to end breast cancer. Since its inception in 1997, the Komen San Antonio Affiliate has contributed more than $7 million to fund a variety of local breast cancer awareness projects and programs that reflect the mission to eradicate breast cancer and to provide vital services to the medically underserved of our community. Our mission is to grow the national registry with viable, dedicated and ethnically diverse bone marrow donors. We provide education about the need for donors, relief efforts for transplant patients, and opportunities for people to invest their resources, devote their time and donate their bone marrow. Marrow Match™ is a recognized San Antonio non profit organization with 501c(3) status. A nonprofit organization is one that does not distribute its surplus funds to owners or shareholders, but instead uses the money to help pursue its goals. All funds that are raised through Marrow Match™ are used to increase the number of registered bone marrow donors and provide various forms of relief and assistance for transplant patients.
Cox, a San Antonio athlete, actor and model decided to start the foundation after having undergone a bone marrow transplant at the age of nine. Today, helping raise awareness and enrolling people in the Marrow Match system has become a lifelong passion. By debuting his foundation at Vbar’s Fashiontini, Cox hopes to achieve his objective of raising awareness in innovative ways.
“Having the backdrop of Fashiontini is a really great way to get the word out about Marrow Match,” says Cox, Founder of Marrow Match. “Such a highly attended and fun event is what we were looking for to help get people excited about us.”
The mission of CASA is to recruit, train and supervise court-appointed advocates who provide constancy for abused and neglected children and youth while advocating for services and placement in safe and permanent homes.
Gordon Hartman was born and raised in San Antonio. His entrepreneurial spirit developed early and he began pursuing odd jobs at the age of 12. Then while attending high school at a local seminary, he started his own landscaping business and by the age of 19 he had earned and saved enough to build his first house. From his small efficiency apartment, Gordon founded Gordon Hartman Homes in 1983 and began building homes for low-to-moderate income families. Over the next 22 years he managed the growth of his company into the largest locally-owned homebuilding and land development enterprise in San Antonio.
In 2005, Gordon was presented with the opportunity to sell his business and began pursuing his dream of helping children and adults with disabilities. He and his wife, Maggie, established The Gordon Hartman Family Foundation on September 27, 2005 with his initial contribution of $10,000,000. Their devotion to this cause is inspired by their daughter Morgan who was born with cognitive and physical disabilities.
Gordon will very soon realize the birth of another dream with the grand opening of Morgan’s Wonderland in the spring of 2010. He began plans for this park in 2007 when he recognized the tremendous need for accessible outdoor facilities for individuals with special needs. Upon completion, Morgan’s Wonderland will be the first ultra accessible park of its kind in the world specifically designed for the enjoyment of those with special needs. Families from all over the state, the country and the world will be able to come and enjoy a variety of activities that are completely accessible to those with disabilities.
